Review: Tallulah Jane Natural Perfumes and Eau De Parfums

oh Oh OH its MAGIC! That's the first thought that comes to my mind when I first experienced Tallulah Jane Natural Perfumes! I didn't get it at first, the MAGIC of them that is. You have to spray them on and try them for yourself to understand what I mean, and I will try and capture the essence of them for you as best I can. Eleanor, The Perfumer Extraordinaire taught me a few really cool facts about using natural perfumes which made what I noticed about them all makes sense. She explained to me how natural perfumes are vastly different from their synthetic cousins but a lot of fun to wear as the fragrance is constantly changing as the lighter oils lift before the heavier heart and base oils. I will get into this a little more in my review, but I find Tallulah Janes Perfumes unique, captivating, alluring and enticing on so many levels, that I just had to include them in my Sizzling Summer 2010 Guide. The scents are uplifting, fascinating, and sure to please your senses and delight you as they change and evolve on your body. They are innovative, enchanting and will spice up the way you feel and smell! Let me provide you some interesting information about Tallulah Jane:

ABOUT TALLULAH JANE

Something Is In The Air

Tallulah Jane presents beautiful fragrances that embrace the centuries-old craft of Bourbon perfumeries but with a bold, modern sensibility.

Blended with botanical essences, resins and balsams, Tallulah Jane scents are an ever-evolving olfactory experience. Organic and wild crafted oils are mixed together in certified organic grape alcohol or jojoba, then hand poured in small batches. No two vintages are exactly alike, so your Tallulah Jane scent is categorically unique, as if designed by nature - especially for you.

We are committed to making our products ethically, ensuring to never use extracts from plants and trees that are considered unsustainable. Our priorities are not only to create desirable luxury products that are free of parabens, phthalates, and petrochemicals but to preserve and cause no harm to the environment around us. We use only 100% natural ingredients in all of our perfumes and oils, no synthetics are ever added. All of our products are vegan and Leaping Bunny certified cruelty free.

About Our Products

Everything we produce is 100% natural and free of synthetic chemicals. Whenever possible we use wildcrafted oils, even over organic ones if there’s a choice. Wildcrafting is much kinder to the environment as land does not need to be cleared for crop space and generally only the branches or flowers from the plant are taken and the living plant is left. If it is necessary to take the whole plant, seeds of the plant are placed in the empty hole from which the plant was taken. Care is taken to only remove a few plants, flowers, or branches, so plenty remains to continue the supply. And because the trees and plants from which these oils are derived occur in the wild they are basically organic by default, it’s just that they would never be able to be certified so because logistically it would be impossible to verify the conditions under which the flora were grown.

All of our ingredients have been tested for purity and we hand mix and hand pour each and every batch so we know exactly what goes into our perfumes.

Our packaging is produced to a carbon neutral standard, printed with soy inks and the press wash used is natural and non toxic. One of the ways the printer that we use offsets his carbon emissions is by planting food bearing trees in Honduras. He also funds hydroelectric wind turbines, solar photovoltaic panels and methane
capture programs.

We purchase renewable energy units to offset the power use in our facility, we use only nontoxic cleaning products and recycled paper products. All of our products are Leaping Bunny certified cruelty free and vegan.

We want to compete in the industry with all perfumes, synthetic and natural, so our goal was to make excellent perfumes and oils without imposing our views on our clients. We are healthful, green and ethical because we feel there is no other way to be. We didn’t want to make that a requisite part of our brand but it is essential to who we are.

About The Perfumer

Eleanor Jane was born in the southern coast of England but moved to London as a small child where she spent her school years. She continued her studies while working in the fashion industry as a model then moved to photography once she gave up being in front of the camera. Eventually Eleanor turned her attention to the wellness industry where she became a certified health instructor working with cancer survivors, cardiac rehab patients and post rehabilitation patients. She also specialized in pre and post natal and peri-menopausal consultation. While researching lifestyle modifications for some of her clients she learned of the dangers that most fragrances, cosmetics and body care products posed to healthy people, let alone those with compromised constitutions.

Eleanor had worked with essential oils for many years, both for their aromatherapeutic benefits as well as mixing blends for her own personal body oils. She turned her experience with these botanicals and resins into perfumery after learning about all the toxic chemicals that went into each bottle she had sitting on her vanity. Eleanor began studying under natural perfumers and started blending more complex formulas which then happily turned into Tallulah Jane, after the exceeding demand from friends and family for bottles of her fragrances.

About Tallulah Jane

Introducing a new line of natural perfumes from Tallulah Jane. In the tradition of old world luxury but with a modern sensibility, Tallulah Jane is a NYC based perfumery creating 100% natural perfumes, body oils and colognes made only from botanical essences. These ingredients are organic or wildcrafted whenever possible, without compromising the quality of the perfume. All of our alcohols and carrier oils are certified organic.

Our formula? There isn’t just one.

Each of Tallulah Jane’s vintages are hand mixed in small casks to maintain purity and left to macerate for a minimum of four weeks before being decanted by hand . Many of our ingredients are rare and grown seasonally so mass production is difficult, making each vintage that much more unique.

Purity at its most rarified.

We at Tallulah Jane are committed to making our products ethically, ensuring to never use extracts from plants and trees that are considered unsustainable and present our blends in eco-conscious and recyclable packaging. Our priorities are not only to create desirable luxury products that are free of parabens, phthalates, and petrochemicals but to preserve and cause no harm to the environment around us. All of our products are vegan and we are Leaping Bunny certified cruelty free.

Experiencing the scents.

Unlike its synthetic cousins, natural perfume doesn’t need chemicals to express itself. But it does need a little time to breathe. Give a minute or two after applying for full effect.

MY REVIEW

Eleanor very generously sent me really nice size samples of 5 different perfumes and one full size bottle of Misae, one of her newest fragrances. I am going to tell you about each one and try and capture the intriguing aspects that each one embodies as each one encompasses splendor to be enjoyed and experienced. As Eleanor explained to me each fragrance, like most naturals, are an ever evolving olfactory experience. Synthetic fragrances tend to maintain the same redolence throughout their duration on the skin whereas as naturals usually reveal themselves in layers. Each fragrant oil that composes a natural has a different rate of dissipation which is what creates this layering effect.

After initial application of these perfumes the organic grape alcohol will lift from your skin and you will smell the top notes which are the lighter and brighter scents. Top notes almost always consist of citruses such as blood orange, grapefruit and yuzu or spice notes (as in our Gotham) such as allspice, fresh ginger and pink pepper, lavender essential oil is also considered a top note.

Middle notes tend to be heavier florals such as ylang ylang, jasmine and rose.

Base notes tend to be more resinous or woody such as vetiver, patchouli, frankincense or sandalwood and remain fixed to the skin the longest. Of course these are just examples, but I found this information so useful in my understanding how each scent actually works on my skin after I apply it. You see, initially when you spray them on they smell, well, weird.......you need to give each scent about 5 minutes to work its "MAGIC"......ah, now you see why I say oh Oh OH it's MAGIC!! Within 10 minutes after applying the scent you won't be able to stop sniffing your arm, of wherever you sprayed it, I am serious! The scents are mesmerizing, they will drive you crazy with delight! So let's dive in and allow me to explain about each one that I tried out:

Oh oh oh, before I begin I also have to comment on how beautifully packaged everything arrived to me like. It was such a special, first class, 5-Star experience!! Receiving a Tallulah Jane Package makes a gorgeous gift for someone birthday, Mother's Day, Father's Day or Christmas, or just a special gift for yourself or someone you love for no special reason, just because you care! But when you open your Tallulah Jane White box, you will not be disappointed, it is a most memorable experience!!

MISAE Natural Eau De Parfum
Price: $48 for a 1 oz. Spray Bottle

Redolent of an April stroll in the gardens and groves of Saint-Paul de Vence, Misae is a breath of springtime on the Cote d’Azur. Brilliant citrus is embraced by white and green florals all the while grounded by hints of wood and balsam.

Top Notes: Pink Grapefruit, Bitter Orange, Lemongrass and Galbanum
Middle Notes: Egyptian Geranium and Ylang Ylang
Bottom Notes: Woods and Elemi

MY THOUGHTS: I received a full size 1 oz. spray bottle of this scent. It is one of Tallulah Jane's newest additions and it is just divine!! I am not sure if this scent will be the same for everyone, and for me my experience was that the fragrance was consistently changing on me as time went on. When I initially sprayed the scent on to be honest, it smelled kind of weird, not bad, but different, very very earthy smelling. But after about 15 minutes it began to evolve on my skin. I'd like to think that all the different fragrance notes contained within the scent needed time to explore, adapt and breathe according to what my skin's chemical balance is and in the end this crisp, fresh, clean, lovely scent was left lingering on my skin. I could really smell the Egyptian Geranium and the combination of top notes, I really enjoy wearing this scent now and believe me when I say I am no expert on fragrances and how they work, this is just my interpretation of how my body reacted to it, and I find it most intriguing and innovative. I also found I wanted to spray the scent on me several times throughout the day to refresh and revive the scent. It felt so good knowing that the ingredients in this fragrances, as well as all the others, are all natural, and purely safe for my skin. That is so important to me as in our home we are passionate about living a healthy green lifestyle in as many aspects of our lives as we can.

TALLULAH Natural Eau De Parfum
Price: $48 for a 1 oz. Spray Bottle

Creamy jasmine notes flirt with heady tuberose in our signature fragrance, creating a scent that is timeless yet nouveau.

Top Notes: Ginger and Bergamot
Middle Notes: Tuberose, Jasmine and Clary Sage
Bottom Notes: Frankincense, Elemi and Cedarwood

MY THOUGHTS: So I do not get repetitive here, I have to say that each time I sprayed on each of these fragrances I experience pretty much the same "waiting" period for each scent to "come to life" on me, which was actually the coolest thing to experience. Imagine never really knowing quite what the end result was going to be, but you know it will be pleasing and satisfying and perhaps a little different each and every day. That to me is the gift that keeps on giving because you will be surprised and fascinated each time you use these products. I love the ginger and bergamot combination of this scent, and when combined with jasmine makes for a very exotic end result. This is an exceptional scent that I found myself very drawn to, and do did a couple of my friends who happened to be over when I was testing this one out. It is just elegant and classy and will keep you wanting to reapply it throughout the day as well to resurrect the scent on yourself.

GOTHAM Natural Eau De Parfum
Price: $48 for a 1 oz. Spray Bottle

Equal parts Bloomsbury and Bay of Bengal, this fragrance is a blend of exotic spices and rose, rounded off with the earthy depth of patchouli.

Top Notes: Allspice, Pink Pepper and Nutmeg
Middle Notes: Rose, Geranium and Violet Leaf
Bottom Notes: Vetiver, Patchouli and Myrrh

MY THOUGHTS: If you love rose and the sexy scent of patchouli then this is the fragrance for you. It is the best of both worlds, a touch feminine and a touch earthy which is a distinctive unique blend that I really enjoyed exploring with wearing. It is not the type of scent I would typically wear, I usually go for more sweeter smells, but I found I was just as drawn to this scent as I was to the other, they truly have this "magical" way of drawing you in with their evocative aromatic smells and they keep you wanting to indulge in them repeatedly throughout the day and night.

333 Natural Eau De Parfum
Price: $48 for a 1 oz. Spray Bottle

Our exquisite triple threat: 3 different types of chamomile and lavender are combined with 3 essences of citrus tree; neroli, petitgrain and bitter orange.

The result? An elegantly patrician fragrance with more than a hint of attitude.

Top Notes: 2 types of Lavender, Chamomile Roman, Bitter Orange and Petitgrain
Middle Notes: Chamomile Maroc, Lavender Absolute, Neroli
Bottom Notes: Blue Chamomile, Amaris, Elemi and Cistus

MY THOUGHTS: This is such a light refreshing scent, and so perfect for those warm, sultry summer days. It is so clean smelling and makes you feel carefree and energized! I wore this a couple of times and got compliments from my friends who couldn't wait to test it out on themselves. We all agreed that the combination of ingredients was marvelous and it was a classic timeless type of fragrance. It is the kind of scent you can wear to the workplace and no one would be bothered by it, not that you couldn't with all the others as well, but this one in particular was the perfect choice for the workplace.

LEOTIE Natural Eau De Parfum
Price: $48 for a 1 oz. Spray Bottle

A deep bouquet of meadow flowers baths the senses in their essence. Elegant, enchanting and decisively feminine.

Top Notes: Yuzu and Violet
Middle Notes: Carnation, Rose, Jasmine and Wild Lavender
Bottom Notes: Tonka, Sweet Woods and Violet Leaf

MY THOUGHTS: Okay, hands down of all the scents I tried out, this one is my absolute favorite, it is sheer genius, perfectionism at its finest for me!! It is undescribeable how sexy, exotic, alluring, and fabulous this smells until you experience it for yourself. But honestly, I could not stop smelling my arms with it on me, it was like a drug that just kept making me crave more. If you are looking for a beautiful, feminine, complex, glorious fragrance that will be captivating to those around you, this is the scent for you. I promise it will make you feel so confident and happy, and yes sexy! I love this!

YISKA Natural Eau De Parfum Pour Homme
Price: $48 for a 1 oz. Spray Bottle

Yiska for men is bold and contemporary in its opening citrus notes before subtle florals widen its experience. Woods, tea and leather round off this fresh yet sophisticated scent.

Top Notes: Distilled Lime, Grapefruit and Bergamot Mint
Middle Notes: Lavender Seville, Styrax and Clary Sage
Bottom Notes: Cedarwood, Tonka, Vetiver and Black Tea

MY THOUGHTS: Okay, I let my cousin who is 18 try this out as well as my husband. So I was able to get two different perspectives about it. Both men gave this their seal of approval. I have to say, neither of them likes to wear fragrances that are discernible, they prefer very subtle fragrances that you can barely notice. They are men that care about their appearance, and both enjoy being well groomed, they just don't want any flashy obvious fragrances on their bodies. So when they both agreed this was a scent they would wear on a regular basis, I was sort of shocked, with joy! From a woman's perspective, I think it is dynamic in a very low key way. I noticed it, smelled it, but it was a soft, masculine smell, but also very crisp and clean smelling. I could clearly detect the lime and sage and a hint of the lavender which sweetened it ever so slightly. Bravo Eleanor for winning over with this one with my two guys!! Also, this is a scent that is timeless and ageless, men of any age would be thrilled with it, and again this is a scent that is perfect for the workplace, or classrooom, which is where my husband and cousin both wore it to.
